Today we’ll talk about Architects and the role they play in contract furniture and commercial interiors. Architects research, plan, program, design and sometimes administer building projects. They have professional knowledge of building materials, zoning and building codes, systems, construction, procedures and design. Architects work closely with interior designers, they are the A in A&D, to ensure plans, drawings and specifications are accurate.  

Architects that work in firms will typically be promoted senior architect after about 8 years, project manager after 10 years and then move on to senior manager, junior principal, mid or senior principal and or partners as they progress in their career.  

Some of the key ways architects add value to commercial projects include… 

• Consultation – where structural elements like bathrooms, elevators, cafes, visitor areas and parking are discussed.  
• Document and Design Development – considering zoning maps, past parcel data, permits and submittal requirements.  
• Initial Proposals and Sketch Designs – that correlate with timeline, budget and aesthetics of project. 
• Detailed Drawings and Scale Models – often leveraging input from stakeholders like structural and electrical engineers, lighting, heating, ventilation experts and interior design professions.  
• Permitting, Diagramming and Schematics – to ensure the building meets all requirements and the project is able to stay on time and on budget. 
• Construction Administration and Project Management – often by helping clients select and worth with a General Contractor, answering questions and solving any problems that arise along the way.  

As you can see, the Architect does a whole lot and is a critical stakeholder in a successful commercial interior project. Understanding the role of these professionals and including them in your network will make you well suited to serve your clients well.
